Cupping

Modern cupping helps reduce muscle tension and improve tissue mobility. Often combined with remedial massage for a tailored treatment.

What is Cupping?

Cupping is a soft tissue treatment that uses specially designed silicone or plastic cups to create gentle negative pressure (suction) on the skin and underlying tissues.

Unlike massage, which applies pressure into the muscles, cupping gently lifts the tissues. This may help reduce muscle tension, improve tissue mobility and provide a different type of mechanical stimulus to the area being treated.

At Peak Motion Therapy, cupping is used as one of several treatment techniques available. It is often combined with remedial massage, movement assessment and other hands-on techniques when appropriate to your presentation.

How can it help?

Cupping may help with:

Muscle tightness and tension
Reduced tissue mobility
Neck and back pain
Shoulder pain
Hip and glute discomfort
Recovery following training
General muscle stiffness
Movement restrictions where soft tissue tension may be contributing
Like all treatment techniques, cupping is selected based on your assessment and goals rather than being used routinely.

What happens during treatment?

Before using cupping, we’ll discuss whether it’s suitable for you and explain what to expect.

The cups are gently applied to the skin using controlled suction. Depending on the area being treated, they may remain still for a short period or be moved across the skin using massage oil to create a gentle gliding technique.

Most people describe the sensation as a feeling of tightness or gentle pulling rather than pain. Throughout your treatment we’ll communicate with you and adjust the level of suction to ensure you’re comfortable.

Cupping is frequently combined with remedial massage and other manual therapy techniques to provide a treatment that is tailored to your individual needs.

What can I expect afterwards?

Many people report feeling reduced muscle tension, improved movement and a sense of looseness following treatment.

It’s common for circular marks to appear where the cups have been applied. These marks are not bruises caused by tissue damage—they’re a temporary response to the suction and usually fade over several days, although this varies between individuals.

Some people may also experience mild tenderness similar to post-exercise soreness for 24–48 hours.

We’ll discuss any aftercare advice before you leave and, where appropriate, recommend simple movement or self-management strategies to support your recovery.

Why Peak Motion Therapy?

Cupping isn’t a treatment we use because it’s popular—it’s a technique we may choose because it suits your presentation.

Every appointment begins with understanding your symptoms, movement and goals before selecting the most appropriate treatment approach. Sometimes that may include cupping, while other times remedial massage, dry needling, education or movement advice may be more suitable.

Our focus is always on using the right combination of treatment techniques to help you move better, recover well and stay active—not simply using more

Please note: Cupping may leave temporary circular marks on the skin that usually fade within several days. If you have an upcoming special event, photo shoot or competition where visible marks may be a concern, please let your therapist know before treatment.
