Dry Needling

Dry needling can help reduce muscle tension, relieve pain and improve movement. Used alongside hands on treatment where appropriate.

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a treatment technique that uses fine, sterile single-use needles to target muscles and surrounding soft tissues that may be contributing to pain, movement restrictions or muscle tension.

Unlike acupuncture, dry needling is based on modern anatomy and the assessment of the musculoskeletal system. It is commonly used alongside remedial massage and other manual therapy techniques as part of an individualised treatment plan.

At Peak Motion Therapy, dry needling is never used as a stand-alone “fix.” It is simply one of the treatment options that may be appropriate depending on your presentation, goals and comfort.

How can it help?

Dry needling may help with:

Muscle tightness and tension
Neck and back pain
Shoulder pain
Hip and glute pain
Sporting injuries
Tendon-related pain
Headaches related to muscle tension
Improving movement where muscle tension is contributing to restriction
Like any treatment, dry needling is not suitable for everyone and is only recommended when it is likely to support your overall treatment goals.

What happens during treatment?

Before using dry needling, we’ll discuss whether it’s appropriate for you and answer any questions you may have.

The area is assessed before fine sterile needles are gently inserted into specific muscles. Depending on the muscle being treated, you may feel:

A brief prick as the needle enters the skin
A dull ache or heaviness
A small muscle twitch
Temporary reproduction of familiar symptoms
These responses are normal and usually settle quickly.

Not every treatment requires dry needling. Some appointments may involve remedial massage alone, while others may combine hands-on therapy, movement advice and dry needling to best suit your needs.

Throughout your treatment we’ll communicate with you, adjusting the approach to ensure you’re comfortable and confident with every step.

What can I expect afterwards?

Many people notice reduced muscle tension and improved movement shortly after treatment.

It’s also common to experience mild muscle soreness similar to post-exercise soreness for 24-48 hours. Occasionally a small bruise may occur where a needle has been inserted.

After treatment we may recommend gentle movement, hydration or specific exercises to help support your recovery.

As with all treatments at Peak Motion Therapy, dry needling is only one part of your care. Understanding your symptoms and providing practical strategies to support long-term improvement remain the focus.

Why Peak Motion Therapy?

Dry needling isn’t something we use routinely—it is used when it adds value to your treatment.

Every session begins with understanding your symptoms, movement and goals before deciding which treatment techniques are most appropriate. For some people this may include dry needling, while for others hands-on therapy, education and exercise advice may be the better option.

Our focus isn’t on using more techniques—it’s on using the right techniques to help you move better, recover well and return to the activities that matter most.
